Not every forever is a cliché.

You promised me a forever on our first date
and I said you were cliché
You warned me you would be different.

The first time you showed up late on our date
I spent the time biting on my fingernails
sipping through a straw
in a half-empty glass
hoping to find a reason or at least some patience.
It sounds a bit too much, I know.
But it was the first promise you had broken
and I didn’t want to tip the dominoes.

You gave me roses as an apology
because you wouldn’t mean the words.
Your hugs stopped feeling like campfires
and you kissed me only when you were turned on.

Soon after
our love became like the metaphorical half-filled cup
I loved you and was the half-full
You were the half-empty.

I found a forever in your goodbye.
You did warn me you would be different.
